About

Matthew Wordsmith

I studied at South Bank University in Biotechnology and International Business. After spending several years working as a chef and journalist in London and in scientific publishing in Oxford thereafter, I turned to letter cutting in stone as a permanent form of publishing, where I have been traditionally trained in the lineage of Eric Gill under the patronage of Bernard Johnson at the Pig Sty, Kiddington.

In 2021, I was awarded a Journeyman grant from the Lettering Arts Trust to further my development. As part of this I have contributed an exhibit, Turtle Dove, to the ‘On A Knife’s Edge’ exhibition running from Friday, 9 July 2021 to Sunday, 7 November 2021, 11am -4pm.

I have a sustainable ethic, always attempting to recycle stone for memorials and commissioned works. Besides stone carving, I’ve embraced the green ethos since moving out of London in 2005, growing vegetables, learning the arts of hedge-laying and stone walling, and also helped with the fundraising for Southill Community Energy, a community owned solar farm outside Charlbury.
